Tea tree oil is becoming a popular choice in acne face washes and is often used to treat oily skin. The name
"tea tree oil" is actually somewhat misleading, since the oil in this product doesn’t come form the traditional
tea leaf tree. It comes from the Melaleuca species of tree commonly found in Australia. Tea tree oil is in such demand
that Australia is now exporting around 700 tons a year of this plant’s leaves.
Studies have shown that tea tree oil is effective when it is around 5-15% of the composition in the face wash. However,
studies have also found that while tea tree oil is as effective at reducing acne as benzoyl peroxide, the tea tree oil
took longer for the results to show.
For those that just want to use a new type of product or one with a nice fragrance, tea tree oils might be the right
direction. It may also yield a nice result for those with more oily skin. However, tea tree oil face wash might not be as
effective as it is made out to be, but don’t let that stop you from trying it. Many people find that this more natural
approach to treating acne is just what they needed.
